The problem with discussing hot button topics on an open forum or social media feed is that you always have someone ready to insult you.
When I voice my opinion, it is not out of malice, hatred, or bigotry. I was not raised to hate or be spiteful. I was not raised to judge an entire race or sexual orientation as a whole. I was taught to treat them as I would like to be treated.
I was also taught the value of hard work, achieving goals you set for yourself, and helping others when they need help. I was taught that the smarter you work, the more you stand to make, and this does not apply to money solely. This also applies to giving and receiving love and compassion. This applies to recognizing that what are you given was given because you either earned it, or someone cared enough to remember you.
I was taught to stand up for what I believe, and also to believe in something, else I fall for everything.
I was taught the value of friendship, trust, and open-mindedness. I was taught that there were more views out there than just mine, and they should be acknowledged and not belittled. Do I do this all the time? I’m not perfect. I was also taught that you could agree to disagree and that just because someone didn’t agree with you does not give you the right to belittle them or call them out of their name.
There has been a lot of division about different topics among my friends, my family, and myself. We don’t see eye-to-eye, and that’s fine, but I trust that I have never called them ignorant, backwards, or bigots, because I know them. Now, they have jumped my crap because I didn’t agree with them, and I am passionate about many things. I try not to do the same.
I have a sharp tongue, and yes, I exercise it. My mom taught me never to mince words and to make my point clear. Murky words lead to misunderstandings, and I want to make my points clear, even if they are rough around the edges.
As long as there is air in my lungs, I will never be afraid to voice my opinions. I will never be afraid to go against the current status quo, and post information with facts to back it up. I will never stop aggravating the popular opinion people, because my opinions have never been popular to them. If there is a boat, I will rock it.
Aaaaand then there is this:
“He who guards his heart and tongue keeps himself from calamity.”
Well, I guess I will always be walking right into calamity. At least my life won’t be dull.
Until next time, God Bless
