This week has brought new determination in my heart, and motivation to keep things moving in a positive direction. I refuse to let the sorrow that side-railed me last week come into my heart and spirit again. I have too many things to do, too many people to help, and far too many plans to make to let depression and hopelessness take me over.
Matthew 13:19-23 Three types of people…
There are three types of people that receive God’s Word. Here we have a parable that let’s us look into ourselves to see where we fall in the lesson. I have to admit, I have fallen in two different places during my life, depending on circumstances.
20 And he that was sown upon the rocky places, this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it;
21 yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while; and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he stumbleth.
Here we have someone who receives God’s word, and as long as their life is great and fruitful and filled with happiness and blessings, they sing the praises of the Lord. The problem comes when they fall upon hard times. They start to ask God why He is doing this, and what have they deserved to fall on hard times. They rail at God and blame Him for their lack prosperity. Sound familiar? I’ve done this in my younger years. It’s easy to blame Him for hardships. As Christians, we need learn to thank Him for what we have, no matter the situation in which we find ourselves.
22 And he that was sown among the thorns, this is he that heareth the word; and the care of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
This is someone who has come to the Lord and received Him. He has prayed for help in the times of trouble, and now finds himself in the lap of luxury. He has forgotten who has been there to lift him up, and he takes all the credit and turns away from the Lord. In time, he will find himself alone, and without the luxury he has, and once again have to look for the Lord, but will he then be the sower above, or the last one in the parable?
23 And he that was sown upon the good ground, this is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; who verily beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
Here is someone who has built his foundation upon God’s Word, and strives to do good works in His name, thus allowing Him to be blessed beyond his imagining, but never forgetting The One who blessed Him. He too has gone through trials and prayed for guidance, never railing at God and never claiming that he did it Himself, but asks the Lord for strength in times of trouble, and thanks the Lord in times of plenty.
Which one are you?
Until next time, God Bless you,
